a taste of the Regions
Each coastline has its own character. Here are some of our favourite areas to explore:
-
Think rural laidback coastal areas, subtropical waters, and that dreamy “summer never ends” vibe. Up here you’ll find everything from points to beach and reef breaks that fire when swell lines up. Shipwreck Bay - Ahipara, is the crown jewel. A legendary left that can peel for hundreds of metres delivery a variety of wave sizes and punchiness while keeping its quality for all levels. The beauty of the Far North is it’s slow pace, easy living with a feeling that every bay might hide your next surf session.
-
The wild west is where raw power meets steep cliffs and black sand. Piha is one of New Zealand’s most iconic surf beaches, a playground for those that like steep drops and punchy peaks. Muriwai, just up the coast, throws heavy beach breaks against endless black sand. It’s rugged, unpredictable, and unforgettable, with dramatic cliffs and fiery sunsets to match the waves. For surfers chasing raw energy, lining up the the west coast is a must.
-
Golden beaches, crystal water, and consistent breaks make this stretch one of the country’s most loved surf regions. Whangamatā is famous for its left hand sandbar that delivers a consistent peeling wave for all abilities, while Mount Maunganui offers a healthy & energetic town with fun waves right at the base of the Mount and all along its coast. With options of boating to hollow beach breaks, exploring costal towns and waves, this area delivers sunshine and an easygoing holiday that will leave you satisfied with waves and sights.
-
Welcome to the Surf Highway - a coastline wrapping around a volcano, where the swell always seem to find its way in. Fitzroy Beach is a favourite, delivering consistent surf with Mount Taranaki looming in the distance, while Stent Road is a classic right-hand point that locals and travellers dream of. With Taranaki as your backdrop and the ocean always in motion, this region is wave-rich, adventurous, and endlessly rewarding.
-
The East Coast greets the sunrise first, and often the swell too. Gisborne is a surf town through and through, home to gems like Wainui Beach, a powerful stretch that can throw everything from hollow barrels to fun peaks. The surrounding areas add a rugged charm like no other, with spots offering raw, less-crowded surf options. Together, they’re about being in the water, exploring options and that easy coastal lifestyle where time just slows down.
-
This is surfing on the edge of the world. Kaikōura’s Mangamaunu break can dish up long, rippable walls with snow-capped mountains framing the lineup. Dunedin is a surf hub, with many options delivering fun peaks and serving up heavy barrels when it’s on. Further south, the Catlins feels like surfing’s last frontier. Remote, windswept, and often chilly, but the waves are wild, powerful, and often yours alone. Our West Coast Surf travel here is raw, exhilarating, and unforgettable. Over to the South Islands West Coast it serves up powerful beach breaks and untamed point waves. A place where rainforest meets a roaring ocean, and every session feels like an expedition.
